A door lock or latch which can be secured by manipulation of one of the handles, comprises an axially movable spindle Fig. 1, adapted to couple the handles 12, 14 to rotate together, and means operable from one side of the door for disconnecting the handle 12 on that side from the spindle and from the lock or latch operating mechanism, e.g. the follower 9, to permit operation of a locking element, e.g. a follower 10, associated with the handle, to secure the bolt 7 in shot position, or by reverse rotation to release the bolt. The handle 12 is journalled in the latch casing, and carries at the inner end of the boss the locking follower 10, and the sliding spindle comprises a cylindrical part 22 and a square part 20, which slides in a square bore in the handle 14, passes through a square opening in follower 9, and normally enters a squared part of the bore in handle 12. Normally followers 9 and 10 are in line, and both act to withdraw the latch. On pressing the knob 24, the spindle slides farther into handle 14 against a spring 21, the squared part moving out of the squared part of the bore in the handle, which is thus uncoupled from handle 14, and can be rotated in reverse direction so as to rotate follower 10 to the position of Fig. 3 in which it dead locks the latch.
