Abstract

683,633. Pneumatic single -stroke apparatus. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 22, 1950 [Feb. 25, 1949]. No. 4504/50. Class 8 (ii) [Also in Group XXIX] in a pneumatically-actuated piston and cylinder construction having control means 16 for supplying and draining air to either side of the piston 14, lock means mounted on the cylinder 12, and relative to which the piston is movable, retains the piston in any assumed position against an opposing load until application of air pressure to move the piston to another position and is automatically released upon such application of pressure to either side of the piston. The piston 14 has screwed to it a rotatable shaft 46 carrying at the cylinder head end a brake disc 72 pressed by a spring 74 against a stationary friction face 78. Unlocking is effected by air pressure acting behind a brake piston 84 the stem 82 of which displaces the disc 72 to allow rotation thereof and consequent displacement of the piston 14. Compressed air is supplied through a duct 106 to the control valve 16 which comprises a rotatable plug 142 abutting a turret 126 mounted on the cylinder head cap 24. With the valve 16 in the "lock" position both sides of the piston 14 and the brake cylinder are vented to atmosphere through valve ports 178, 182 respectively. The brake piston 84 and hence the disc 72 may be held in the displaced position to prevent automatic locking of the piston 14 by the stem of a manually operable screw 92.
