Abstract

683,550. Collapsable spindles. CROSBY, E. A. March 24, 1950 [April 5, 1949], No. 7406/50. Class 100 (i). [Also in Group XXIV] A device for use in winding and unwinding paper and other flexible sheet material comprises a hollow arbor 2 mounted on a pair of stub shafts 3 or a single shaft, and a cord 7 of distort able material, for example, wire or rubberized cord extending along a longitudinal groove 5 in the arbor 2, the cord being secured at its ends by movable collars 9 having locking collars 11. A surrounding collar 14, on or from which sheet material is wound or unwound, fits over the arbor 2 and is locked thereto when rotated counterclockwise, as shown in Fig. 2, by the cord 7 which is forced to the shallow side of the groove 5. A spring-pressed metal strip 10 may be provided to urge the cord 7 outwardly. At the completion of a winding or unwinding operation the collar 14 is rotated clockwise and so released to permit axial withdrawal of the collar 14. A second arbor, or, a pair of short arbors, similar to, but of larger diameter than the arbor 2 may be slid over the latter to support a core of an increased diameter.
