Abstract

Normally toxic organic iodine containing pharmaceutical products or normally toxic inorganic halogen-containing pharmaceutical products supplying free halogen ions in solution are detoxified by mixing therewith a polymeric N-vinyl-a-pyrrolidone. Specified halogen-containing substances are elementary iodine, Lugol's solution, colloidal iodine suspensions, salts of iodine, iodides, iodates, hydrogen iodide, hypoiodious acid, elementary chlorine, hypochlorites, hydrochloric acid, toxic salts of chlorine, "Diodrast" (Registered Trade Mark) thyroid gland products such as thyroxin and di-iodo tyrosine. The polymer may have an atomic weight of 30,000 to 40,000. The preparations may be applied externally as ointments, creams, jellies, or internally as parenteral or intramuscular injections or as suppositories. The preparations may also contain soaps, organic sulphonates and sulphates, polyglycol ethers or cationic detergents, and enzymes such as hyalouronidase. U.S.A.
