Abstract
680,001. Vacuum pumps. EDWARDS & CO. (LONDON), Ltd., W., and BARRETT, A. S. D. Oct. 12, 1949 [Oct. 12. 1948], No. 26505/48. Classes 110 (i) and 110 (ii) [Also in Group XXVIII] A method of obtaining a high vacuum in a container consists in employing a large volume displacement mechanical pump 2 capable of a minimum displacement of 100 cu. ft./min. and operating at high speed without rubbing contact, together with a mechanical backing pump 1 or an ejector. The large volume displacement pump 2 may be a Northey compressor, a Rootes blower or a centrifugal blower or piston and cylinder pump and the pump 1 a rotary pump. The pump 2 may be immersed in a tank containing a low vapour pressure liquid which may be maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure e.g. by connecting it to the pump 1. The pump 2 may be sealed by a film of sealing liquid. A pressure relief valve 5 may be inserted in the line between the pumps 1, 2 and the line may have a cooled trap 25 and a pressure responsive switch 26 to switch off the motor driving pump 1. Pump shaft seals on the pump 2 may be connected to the pump 1 to prevent ingress of lubricant to pump 2. The system may be used to back a vapour steam pump.
