Abstract

Granular high nitrogen fertilizers are prepared by adding to raw fertilizer such as den superphosphate with or without muriate of potash, anhydrous ammonia and sulphuric acid diluted with sufficient water to control the temperature of the reaction mass between 212 and 300 DEG F, and tumbling the reaction mass during the addition to form granules which are coated with agitation to give a moisture content of 2 to 4 per cent in the final granule, which are then sieved to a uniform size, the fines and crushed oversize granules being recycled. The ammonia and sulphuric acid are preferably added through a common nozzle to the reaction mass in a rotary granulator. The product, of which 75 per cent is between 8 and 16 mesh per linear inch, may contain up to 15 per cent nitrogen and may be mixed with similar sized granules of other fertilizers such as superphosphate, potash or dolomite, a small proportion of clay and carbon black may be added.
