Abstract
<PICT:0686077/III/1> In a tower in which pulverulent limestone falls by gravity in counterflow relationship to hot gases converting it to quicklime, the tower is formed with a series of superposed and alternating oppositely inclined planes S which at their top ends 8 are spaced further from projections 7 formed in the tower walls than are the bottom ends 9. An oil burner projects through an orifice 17 in a cone members 13 and secondary air supplied to a lower cooling section 18 of the tower by a fan 21 passes partly through a chamber 16 and the orifice 17 to the burner, and partly from the base of the tower carrying cooled quicklime through a pipe 23 to a separator 24, the air being re-cycled by a fan 30. Material falling through the small openings F is caught up by gases rising through the larger openings f and is carried by the major part of the gases over the next lower plane 5 where it is deposited owing to the gases losing velocity in the widening space above said lower plane. Escape of gases upwards through the smaller openings F is said to be hindered by the formation therein of fluidized beds of the pulverulent material.
