Class 20(ii) [Also in Group XXII] Profile members forming part of a metal arch are connected by means of brackets and straps, each welded to one member and bolted to the other and so arranged that only the bolting is done on the site and yet the welded parts are convenient in shape for transport. As applied to an arch of the portal frame type built from I-sections the pillar 3, Fig. 2, has welded to its flanges 31 a bracket 33 having weldedon flanges 34 and 35, that 35, extending across the top of the pillar and having a separate and thicker part 36, also welded, in which the bolt holes are formed. The rafter 1 has a part of its lower flange cut away and replaced by a thicker welded-on part 38 with bolt holes matching the part 36 and has a strap 23 welded at 25 across its end and extending down the side of the pillar which has a'thickened flange 28. The strap 23 may also be drilled for bolting on to a lean-to extension 40 that has a similar joint at 51 to its pillar 45. The rafters 1, 2, Fig. 4, are joined by straps 74, welded across their ends, with welded-on reinforcements for bolts 82, and extending across brackets 70 welded both to the straps and the rafters. The welded-on lower flanges 72 of the brackets are drilled for bolting to a strap 80. Reinforcements 56, 90, Fig. 2, and 76, 78, Fig. 4, may be welded on if desired. The flanges may be reinforced by welding on additional pieces instead of by cutting away and replacing.
