Abstract
685,353. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems ; electrically actuated valves. RESEARCH CORPORATION. March 5, 1951 [April 26, 1950], No. 5254/51. Class 135 [Also in Group XXXV] In a servomotor system of the kind comprising a hydraulically actuated mechanism 14 controlled by a spring-loaded valve 26 which is actuated by the pressure in a chamber 31, which pressure is varied by movement of a member 34 controlling an outlet 36 from the chamber 31 in response to control signals applied to an electrical actuator 35, the actuator consists of a permanent magnet and an electro-magnet, and the force acting on the armature 34 due to the permanent magnet is balanced by a spring 51. Member 34 is a spring arm fixed at its upper end. The actuator may consist of a motor with a rotary armature. The electro-magnet shown may have simple or push-pull coils. A hydraulic pressure fluid is applied at 19 to the right-hand (smaller) face of piston 14, and it flows along passage 28 to the valve 26 and also past a restriction 40 to the chamber 31 and to outlet 36. Oscillation of valve 26 is prevented by providing a damping restriction 37 between chamber 31 and the outlet 36. In the neutral position of valve 26, to which it is urged by a leaf spring 23, there is negative lap between the controlling edges of the valve and the chamfered edges of the co-operating groove 25 so that there is a small flow of fluid from passage 28 through passage 29 to the left-hand side of piston 14 and also to an exhaust passage 30. Fluid which escapes from the outlet 36 flows to exhaust through a passage 43.
