Abstract
672,706. Ammunition cartridges. PARIS, C. May 23, 1949. No. 13733/49. Class 9 (i). [Also in Group V] A cartridge case for military ammunition with a body of plastic moulding material and a metal cap is assembled during the moulding of the body, means being provided for anchoring the plastic material to the cap. The body 1, Fig. 1, may be moulded from a polyamide derivative and the cap 3 may be knurled, serrated or roughened to hold the body. The cap has a flange 4 to facilitate extraction from the cartridge chamber of a firearm. The flange may be replaced by a groove and the anchoring means may be circular ribs on the cap to which the body may be moulded. The cap may be ribbed both internally and externally, Fig. 9, the external ribs corresponding to the internal grooves so that the thickness of the metal is uniform. Figs. 4 and 5 show a multi-part core used in moulding the body 1 on the cap 3. The core has a central stem 8 with a lower part of reduced diameter, bevelled edges of peripheral elements 9, 11 fitting into the recessed shoulder between the upper and lower part of the stem. The lower part 10 of the elements 9 is shaped to fit into a groove in the cap. After forming the case, the central stem 8 of the core is removed thus freeing the elements 9, 11. The elements 11 are free to move inwardly, whereupon the elements 9 can be removed. A modified core (not shown) has the peripheral elements 9 formed with a hook fitting into a seating at the -lower end of the stem. The number of the peripheral elements may be varied. The resultant case where it is connected to the cap may have internally a paraboloidal form. The case may have a projection 14 with a passageway 15 communicating with the detonator chamber 16, so that the propellent may be ignited centrally (Fig. 9). The projection 14 may be integral with the body 1 or with the cap 3.
