679,958. Rack-and-pinion gearing. CAM GEARS, Ltd. May 11, 1950 [May 12, 1949], No. 12752/49. Class 80 (i). [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle rack and pinion steering gear the rack is connected with freedom for transverse movement to a transmission component which is guided to slide longitudinally, the rack being resiliently urged transversely to hold its teeth in mesh with the pinion teeth. As shown in Fig. 1 a rack bar 3 is urged against a pinion 1 operated by the steering column by springs 13, 14 between the bar and pads 15 bearing against the transmission component in the form of a tube 4 which is slidably supported in brackets 5, 6. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a spring operates between a slipper which is in slidable contact with the rack bar, and one of the supporting brackets, a suitable slot being arranged in the transmission component. In screwed connection with the rack bar 3 is a rod 21 having at its other end a ball head 22 which is a snug fit in the tube 4. Springs 23, 24 act between the head 22 and abutments 25, 26 on the tube 4. Alternatively the rod 2 can be directly pivoted to the tube 4. The tube 4 is connected by ball and socket joints 8, 9 with tie rods 10, 11 connected to the steering arms of the steerable wheels. Corrugated flexible cylinders 28 are provided between the tie rods and the brackets 5, 6.
