Abstract

678,743. Water sterilizers. GREVILLE, E. G., and HICKMAN, F. C. April 18, 1951 [April 18, 1950], No. 9494/50. Class 49. In a sterilizer for water or saline water, the flow of liquid from the container to the outlet cock is controlled by an auxiliary valve and the inlet valve is associated with means which close automatically the auxiliary valve when the inlet valve is opened, and there is provided means dependent on the pressure or temperature in the liquid container to open the auxiliary valve when sterilizing of the liquid in the container has been completed. Water is led by a pipe 2 having a stopcock 3 into a closed container 1, is there heated, and is afterwards drawn off at a cock 8. An auxiliary valve 9 between the container 1 and the cock 8 is maintained closed by an electromagnetic device 10 while sterilization of the water in the container is being effected. On turning the spindle 4 of the inlet cock 3 to charge the container, a cam 5 on the spindle depresses an arm 6, which closes electrical contacts 15 and 16 and allows current to flow through leads 13 and 14 to close the electromagnetic device 10 in the valve 9, and so prevents drawing off of water by the cock 8. When the container has been charged, valve 3 is closed by operation of the spindle 4, but the arm 6 is held by a latch 20. When the water has been heated sufficiently, the pressure (e.g. 10-18 lb./sq. in.) in a tube 31 actuates a bellows 30 to depress an arm 29 and close electrical contacts 26 and 28, current flows through leads 24 and 25, coil 23 of an electromagnet 22 is energized to attract the latch 20 and release the arm 6, the electromagnetic device 10 is thereupon de-energized and the valve 9 opened, and consequently water can be drawn off at the cock 8. If detection of the temperature to which the liquid in the container is heated (e.g. 212‹ F.) is by a thermostat bulb 32, depression of the arm 29 and consequent opening of the valve 9 is delayed for the period necessary for sterilization at this temperature of the water in the container (e.g. 15 min.) by the interposition of a time switch 33.
