Abstract

678,606. Copy-turning. MASCHINENFABRIK ANDRITZ AKT.-GES. Jan. 8, 1951 [Jan. 7, 1950], No. 541/51. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIII] In a method of re-machining pulleys, particularly rope pulleys, by turning or grinding, the tool - holder is maintained in correct relative position to the work (despite eccentric and lateral distortions thereof) by a feeler guided by the profile to be machined, the feedmotion of the tool being effected independently of the movement controlling the tool-holder. A pulley 11 may be trued in situ and driven by its ordinary rope or may be mounted in a lathe &c., for machining. The tool 3, Fig. 2, is carried in a holder on a compound slide 6, 7, and the lower member thereof is circularly adjustable on a further slide 5. The feeler 10, Fig. 3, in the form of a roller, with contact faces arranged to engage the base of the pulley groove, is carried by the slide 5, Fig. 2. This slide is maintained with the feeler against the side wall of the pulley by a weight on a cord and pulley 14, 15, the weight being placed on the side of the slide to hold it against the reaction of the tool. A further slide 4 below and at right-angles to slide 5 also has a pulley, cord, and weight to hold the feeler in the bottom of the pulley groove. Spring, hydraulic, or pneumatic pressure means may be used in place of the weight and cord. To protect the feeler from falling shavings a sheet-metal screen may be provided, or the shavings may be blown away by compressed air.
