Abstract

Blades, nozzles or exhaust tubes for gas turbines, or other corrosion and heat resisting machine parts, made of sintered molybdenum or tungsten, or an alloy or mixture of these, are united with a protective coating of aluminium or aluminium oxide. If an alloy is used, preferably containing 40-60 per cent molybdenum, balance tungsten, the powdered mixture of the two or the powder of pre-alloyed metal may be compacted and sintered. The machine part, after cleaning by dipping in molten potassium hydroxide, is dipped in molten aluminium or placed in a vacuum in which aluminium is heated to vaporization point; the aluminium may be deposited in layers. Heat treatment is then applied so that the deposited aluminium diffuses into and alloys superficially with the tungsten or molybdenum and subsequently the aluminium is superficially oxidized. If the sintered part is somewhat porous, the pores may be filled, before coating, with a metal, such as silver, nickel or titanium, which alloys easily with tungsten or molybdenum and is of lower melting point. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, also describes depositing chromium, titanium or silicon by vaporization of these metals or their volatile compounds or mixture of these, the deposit consisting of a single mixed or unmixed layer, or alternate layers of individual metals. Borides of titanium or chromium may be deposited electrolytically, preferably after the part has been coated with nickel, by inserting it in a mixture of titanium or chromium oxide, boron or boron oxide and calcium chloride, calcium oxide and/or ferrite. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
