Class 6(i) A rotary cultivator, of the type having a power-driven transverse rotor 12, is provided with a shield 13, 31, 41 surrounding the rotor, the shield being made in several parts, some of which are adjustable towards or away from the rotor axis. The device is mounted on a frame 11 pivoted at the rear of a tractor 10. The front part, 13, of the shield is secured at its lower end to a curved plate 29 pivoted to a rod 25 which is movable longitudinally by a lever 28, to vary the distance between the shield and rotor axis. The upper end of the portion 13 is pivoted at 14 to a lever 15. Both the lever 15 and its fulcrum 16 are movable by hand levers 17, 22. A spring 23 urges the screen towards the rotor axis. The rear part 31 of the shield is pivoted at 32 to the frame 11, and can be fixed to a bracket 34 in various angular settings. Its lower end carries a relatively-slidable tailpiece 35. A set of blades 37, pivoted to the inside of the shield, can be set at various angles of inclination thereto, and serves to comminute the rearwardly-flung soil. A curtain of pivoted rods 46 serves a similar purpose. The central part, 41, of the shield, is counterweighted at 44 and can be swung up to permit the escape of large clods. A hopper 45, for seed or fertiliser may be mounted in the opening, or other soil treating appliances may be mounted therein. A blade (not shown) may be mounted at the bottom of the section 13 to cut vegetation. The plate 29 causes the whole structure to rise on meeting obstructions.
