Abstract
674,679. Drying air and gases. DELAWARE ENGINEERING CORPORATION. April 20, 1950 [Jan. 10, 1950], No. 9787/50. Class 34(i). In apparatus for drying air and gases by passage through absorbent material, the tray 61 which holds the absorbent material has a perforated bottom and imperforate sides which incline outwardly from the bottom at an inclination which is selected in accordance with the angle of repose of the material so that changes of level of the material near the side members due to vibration of the tray are reduced. The optimum angle is given as approximately 60 degrees. In modified trays only part of the side walls are inclined outwardly. The air drying apparatus has a casing 10 within which is a chamber 20 having absorbent beds 60 supported in the metal trays 61 and air is blown by a fan 18 through an opening 12 controlled by a damper 21 into a plenum chamber 11 and thence through a port 14 into chamber 20, where it passes through the trays and then into a second plenum chamber 30 which has a discharge passage 38 controlled by a damper 37. To reactivate the absorbent, air drawn by a fan 22 and heated by a gas burner 42 in passage 39 controlled by a damper 40 enters the chamber 30, passes through the trays 61 and chamber 11 and is discharged through passage 23 controlled by damper 24 and connected to fan 22. The dampers 37, 40 and 21, 24 are arranged in pairs on common shafts but 90 degrees apart, so that when dampers 21 and 37 are open, dampers 24 and 40 are closed and viceversa to allow of drying and reactivation periods, the dampers being operated by a single control wheel 50.
