Abstract

674,070. Ink-ribbon mechanism. BRITISH VACUUM CLEANER & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and BROWN, I. G. O. May 4,1949, No. 11954/49. Class 100 (iv). A ribbon reversing mechanism comprises a driven shaft 78 moved axially to engage the drive to either of two ribbon spool shafts 75, 75A the movement being effected by stop 88 attached near the end of the ribbon 71 which engages pivoted levers 63 operating an actuator member 86 containing a resilient member 85 coacting with a two-faced cam 84 on the shaft 78 so that when the resilient member is moved past the overcentre position of the cam the shaft 78 is moved in the reverse direction. The movement is transmitted from the levers 63 to the actuator 86 by shafts 87, 87A which have an axial movement limited by stops 87C, 87D effective when the resilient member 85, in the form of a coiled spring, passes over the highest point of the cam surfaces 84, 84A. The subsequent contraction of the spring 85 effects the axial movement of shaft 78 to cause engagement of either of gears 79, 79A with gears 76, 76A or the spool spindles 75, 75A which have encircling springs 81, 81A imparting a braking action on the non-driven spool to prevent slackening of the ribbon. The ribbon spool shafts 75, 75A may be formed with hollow ends for the reception therein of ends of the shaft 78. The mechanism may be used in a time recorder machine described in Specification 674,071, [Group XIX].
