Abstract
662,425. Sanitary closets. ROCA, M. G., and ROCA, F. G. Dec. 16, 1949. No. 32345/49. Class 26. In a water closet seat or cover adapted to be lifted automatically in a controlled manner when relieved of pressure the seat or cover 1 is provided with a fixed crankshaft which is coupled, by a connecting-rod 7 to an operating-rod 10 having a loose piston 11 mounted thereon under the pressure of a spring 12. The piston 11 &c. operates in a cylinder 4 having a byepass 18 the effective passage of which is adjustable by means of a needle valve 9, the whole arrangement comprising a dash-pot. When the seat 1 is lowered and held down the piston 11 is raised in the cylinder 4 thereby compressing the spring 12 and the fluid above the piston 11 flows, in a retarded manner, to the underside of the piston 11 by means of the byepass 18 and ports 19, 20 in the piston 11 and operating-rod end the pressure unseating the ball valve 15 against its spring 16. When the seat 1 is no longer held down the spring 12 gradually raises the seat, the fluid meanwhile passing from below the piston to above it by means of the byepass 18. If the seat 1 is rapidly raised by hand the operating-rod end passes below the piston thereby uncovering the ports 19 whereupon the spring 12 presses the piston 11 on to the rod end as shown in Fig. 3.
