669,751. Generating combustion products under pressure. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Feb. 21, 1949 [Feb. 21, 1948], No. 4666/49. Class 51 (i). In a combustion chamber of the type in which fuel is burnt in air or other oxygencontaining gas in a combustion space bounded by a flame tube 4, the air supply being divided into two parts flowing through and outside the flame tube respectively, at least that part of the flame tube which is exposed to the flame is provided with deep corrugations which are continuous and without flat portions therebetween. The combustion chamber may be used in a gas turbine plant. Air enters the combustion space 5 through an annular passage 8 provided with a grating 9 to decelerate the air and to increase its turbulence. Air also enters the combustion space through the annular passage 10 adjacent the inner wall of the flame tube. This passage may have inclined guide vanes 11 which cause the air to pass obliquely over the corrugations in the flame tube. Alternatively, the corrugations may be helically inclined, or both these expedients may be used together. The inner ridges of the corrugations are cut off obliquely at the discharge end of the flame tube to form openings 12, and a collar is provided to deflect inwardly the air flowing through the space 6.
