Abstract
668,650. Oil-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 28, 1949. [July 30, 1948] No. 19876/49. Class 38 (v). An oil-blast circuitbreaker includes an insulating baffle structure 39 having oppositely-arranged blast passages 43 and oppositely-arranged exhaust vents 44 in substantially the same horizontal plane so that the oil flows into and out of a central arcing passage 40 with substantially no axial displacement. The blast is produced by the pressure generated in a space 27 by the arc formed between resiliently-mounted contacts 14, 15 and passes through apertures in insulating plates 29, 30 to a space 28 and thence through vertical apertures 42 in the structure 39 to the passages 43 so as to extinguish the series arc formed between contacts 13, 15. Alternatively, the blast may be produced by a piston (not shown). As shown, the blast passages are subdivided by three spaced plates D, and the exhaust passages by the central plate D, but in a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the blast passage and the exhaust vents are each subdivided by one plate D, each of the exhaust vents being further subdivided by further plates so as to retain the arc looped in the exhaust vents within the structure 39.
