Abstract

665,998. Discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 8,1948, No. 23621/48. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (i). The output energy of a linear accelerator is varied by varying the frequency of the applied wave. The apparatus described comprises a wave-guide having internal apertured discs, the apertures in the discs being progressively varied in diameter so that the wave always travels at the same velocity as the particle beam, for example electrons injected at 50 Kv. and emerging at 20 Mv. By varying the frequency of the applied wave from that giving maximum output energy, the output energy can be reduced to say 1 Mv. without impermissible broadening of the effective width of the energy band. The apparatus is useful for generating X-rays of variable hardness for medical purposes. The output end of the guide has a non-reflective termination for absorbing the residual energy, but with the design described most of the wave energy is converted into particle energy. Dimensions and working data are given in an example. Specifications 645,509 and 646,610 are referred to.
