Abstract

652,558. Transformers; supply systems for discharge apparatus. FERRANTI, Ltd., and GLOVER, A. J. Sept. 24, 1948. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] A moving coil voltage regulator of the autotransformer type having two primary windings 1, 2 in series and with considerable leakage reactance therebetween, auxiliary secondary windings 5, 6 and a movable shortcircuited winding 17, has tapping means 10 which in the " starting " position, i.e. with moving contact 7 on fixed contact 11, disconnects a portion 14 of the primary winding 1 from the secondary circuit and in the " running " position, i.e. with moving contact 7 on fixed contact 13, includes this portion in circuit, the tapping means being automatically changed over when the short-circuited winding attains close magnetic association with this portion at the end of the " starting " process, the tapping means being maintained in the " running " position during subsequent operation. The windings 5, 6 are respectively arranged as bucking and boosting windings and at starting the moving coil 17 is positioned in close magnetic association with the primary winding 2. The transformer ratios and the tapping point 12 are designed so that at startng the output voltage at terminals 15, 16 is only a proportion of the applied voltage. During the starting period the moving coil 17 moves from association with winding 2 to association with winding 1 in which position the output voltage is higher than the applied voltage and when the moving coil reaches the end of its travel the tapping means is automatically changed over to the running position after which the apparatus functions as a normal moving coil voltage regulator. Various embodiments are foreshadowed in which different arrangements of the primary and secondary windings are made or in which only one secondary winding is used. When used in a multiphase system one regulator per phase is used.
