Abstract
In a process for recovering iron from ferrous sulphide-bearing material involving treatment of the ferrous sulphide material with aqueous sulphuric acid to produce ferrous sulphate solution, the ferrous sulphate solution is either heated to above, say, 90 DEG C. or cooled to below say, 25 DEG C. to form solid ferrous sulphate which is separated from the mother liquor, and the mother liquor, with added sulphuric acid and, if necessary, water, is used for the treatment of further sulphide-bearing material. Ore containing iron sulphide is smelted and the resultant matte is treated countercurrent with acid at, say, 50-70 DEG C. to produce (1) hydrogen sulphide, (2) a solid residue of sulphides of cobalt, copper, gold, nickel, platinum, silver, zinc, (3) a neutral saturated solution of iron sulphate. The solid ferrous sulphate is separated by decantation or filtration. The zinc may also be recovered as sulphate by crystallization from an intermediate stage.
