Abstract
655,522. Pistons. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. Nov. 18, 1948, No. 29981. [Class 122(i)] A fluid-operated device wherein a resiliently deformable packing between two relatively movable components is held in sealing contact with one or both components by an initial standing fluid pressure which pressure is exerted on both sides of the device, so that in the event of failure of the fluid pressure the sealing contact is broken, comprises a cylinder 4 having therein a piston 1 secured to a rod 2. A diaphragm 8 secured to a central boss 9 on the piston 1, and forming a closed chamber 10 with the piston 1 carries a packing 7 adjacent but clear of the cylinder 4. The piston 1 is subjected to a standing fluid pressure which acting on the diaphragm 8 forces the packing 7 into contact with the cylinder 4. In modified constructions the packing is deformed by discs slidably mounted on the piston or shaft.
