Abstract
Moulded articles are made by pressing a mixture containing a solid cold-swelling starch and an aldehyde or a substance capable of yielding an aldehyde, and, if desired, an artificial resin component, e.g. a phenol, an amino compound such as urea or a urea derivative, or an aminotriazine such as melamine, or a precondensation product of an aldehyde with an artificial resin component. A catalyst promoting the condensation of the aldehyde with the starch or the artificial resin component, borax to enhance the transparency of the product, or aluminium or chromium salts to increase resistance to water, may be included, together with fillers, plasticizers, pigments, and colouring-agents. The material should not contain more than 10 per cent of water. The material may also contain an aldehyde or a substance capable of yielding an aldehyde and, if desired, an artificial resin component, e.g. a phenol, an amino compound such as urea or a urea derivative, or an aminotriazine such as melamine, or a pre-condensation product of an aldehyde with an artificial resin component.
