Abstract
648,191. Anaesthetic apparatus. TALLEY, H. A. E. Dec. 13, 1948, Nos. 32162/48 and 4612/49. [Class 81(ii)] In anaesthetic apparatus a temperature sensitive means controls the flow of air through a liquid anaesthetic chamber and further air is then admitted and the mixture is led to a face-piece. In the form of the apparatus described, air enters the anaesthetic chamber 2 through an aperture 7 and non-return valve 8, and leaves through a valve 12 and further non-return valve 22. The valve 12 is connected to a temperature sensitive bellows 13. filled with a volatile liquid, such as methyl bromide, and is tapered so as to pass a controlled amount of air through the chamber 2. An- µsthetic is introduced through a filler orifice 3 and the chamber is provided with pins 28 to prevent excessive cooling during evaporation. A controllable amount of additional air can be admitted immediately above the valve 12 through orifices in the tube 17 and a surrounding sleeve 19, the latter being adjustable by a projecting handle 21. Still further air is admitted through an annular orifice 23, surrounding the tube 17, each time the valve plate 22 is lifted. The aperture 7 is made to extend completely around the casing 6 so that it cannot be closed by the patient's hand and the tube 9 extends sufficiently far into the chamber 2 to prevent loss of liquid if the appliance is inadvertently inverted. A wick 2* may be provided to assist evaporation of the anaesthetic.
