Abstract
<PICT:0632179/III/1> <PICT:0632179/III/2> An aspirator for sampling or testing gases comprises a container 1 divided by a partition 2 into upper and lower chambers interconnected by a pipe 5, the gas under test being drawn into the upper chamber as water or other liquid is withdrawn therefrom into the lower chamber at a predetermined rate depending on the size of the orifice in cock 6 and the container being adapted to be inverted such that the lower chamber then becomes the upper chamber and serves to receive the gas in a subsequent sampling or testing operation, characterized in that a detachable gas inlet tube 9, Fig. 2, provided with test device 11, is adapted to be seated in aperture 4 or 41, depending on which chamber is uppermost and that vent tubes 7, 71 are provided in each chamber, the lower end of the gas-inlet tube being positioned above the lower end of the vent tube 7 in the upper chamber. A detachable plug is provided to seal the aperture 41 in the lower chamber. Several connecting pipes 5 provided with cocks having orifices of different sizes may be provided and to prevent breakage the pipes may be situated in recesses in the body of the apparatus. A pipe 10 provided with a full-bore cock serves rapidly to drain the upper chamber, when desired. Liquid level gauges 8, 81 are provided on one or both chambers. Alternatively, the chambers or parts thereof may be made of transparent material carrying a calibrated scale. The gauges or scales are preferably calibrated in minutes to give an indication of the duration of the test.
