Abstract
Paper is dyed at any stage in its manufacture with a dyestuff containing quaternary ammonium, ternary sulphonium or isothiouronium salt groups, each of which is attached through a methylene radical to the carbon atom of an aromatic nucleus. Suitable dyestuffs are those described in Specifications 576,234, 576,270, 587,636, 613,980, 613,982 and 613,983. The dyestuff may be added to the paper pulp in the beater, or added dry or in solution to the stream of pulp between the beater and the machine, with or without sizing agents. Alternatively, the dyestuff may be applied to the finished and dried paper. In the examples: (1) pulp is coloured in the beater by the addition of a solution of the dyestuff obtained by the reaction of tetramethylthiourea with a mixture of copper di- and tri-(chlormethyl)phthalocyanines, together with rosin soap and aluminium sulphate; (2) coloured blotting paper is obtained by adding to the pulp a solution of the dyestuff described in example 1 of Specification 576,270; (3) tissue paper is passed through a solution of the dyestuff obtained from tetramethylthiourea and di(chlormethyl)isodibenzanthrone.
