Abstract
638,868. Electrodeposition of nickel. UDYLITE CORPORATION. April 19, 1947, No. 10479. Convention date, April 20, 1946. [Class 41] A bath for use in the electrodeposition of bright nickel comprises an aqueous acid solution containing one or more nickel salts, a minor proportion of an alpha or beta unsaturated aliphatic sulphonic acid, sulphonamide, or sulphonimide, and a minor proportion of a soluble alkyl pyridinium, quinolinium or isoquinolinium quaternary salt in which the alkyl radical contains from 1 to 18 carbon atoms. The nickel salts may be chosen from the following : nickel chloride, nickel sulphate, nickel sulphamate, nickel fluoborate, a mixture of nickel chloride with nickel sulphate, nickel sulphamate or nickel fluoborate, a mixture of nickel fluoborate with nickel sulphate or nickel sulphamate, or a mixture of nickel chloride, nickel sulphate and nickel fluoborate. The aliphatic compound may be allyl or vinyl sulphonic acid, allyl or vinyl sulphonamide, allyl or vinyl sulphorimide, or a nickel, cobalt, iron, sodium, potassium or magnesium salt of a sulphonic acid. The pH value of the solution is preferably between 3 and 5. The bath may also contain a limited amount of the chloride or sulphate of cobalt or iron. It may also contain as a buffer boric acid or citrates or formates, preferably associated with boric acid. Specifications 525,847, 611,483 and 638,867 are referred to.
