Abstract
634,742. Hand-irons. SILEX CO. July 18, 1947, No. 19322. Convention date, May 25, 1940. [Class 138 (ii)] A base 5 of a hand-iron carries a hollow body 7 which contains a steam chamber 12 having an opening 41 at the top which is closed by a cover 39, the cover carrying a manuallyoperable steam delivery control valve 50, 51 and a pressure releasing means 70 which is accessible only from the bottom of the cover. The base 5 has a recess 20 which is closed by a screwed plug 20<SP>1</SP> to form a steam distributing chamber which has orifices 21 leading to an ironing surface 6. Mounted between the base 5 and the body 7 is an electric heater 29, current for which is supplied through a thermostat 31 screwed to the rear of the base and adjusted by a knob 34. The cover 7 is connected to the base by means of lugs at the rear and also by a post 25 which engages a screwed boss on the plug 20<SP>1</SP>. The post 25 has a bore 26 which communicates with the steam distributing chamber and also with the control valve 50, 51. The interior of the body 7 forms the water and steam generating container and has a baffle 17 and a filling opening (not shown) closed by a screwed plug and located in a recess so that it is below the baffle level to prevent overfilling. The cover 39 which is sealed to the opening 41 in the top of the body 7 by means of a gasket 42, a plate 43 and screws 44 mounts a handle 63, comprising two sections dowelled together, by means of lugs 66 and also mounts on its underside the safety valve 70 which exhausts through a port 71. The control valve comprises a shell 51 which is fixed to an extension on the post 25 by a nut 67 and which is forced into a recess 52 in the cover 39. The shell 51 contains a rotatable tapered plug 50 which is connected to an operating lever 59, both being forced downwardly by a spring 61 which engages a recess in the handle 63 through a ball 62. The shell and plug both have orifices arranged so that by rotating the plug the steam generating chamber is either connected to the distributing chamber or to an exhaust port 57.
