[Class 78 (iv)] A refuse vehicle wherein refuse is loaded through an opening in the upper face of the vehicle body by a bucket which is raised to its discharging position by mechanical power means, said opening normally being closed by a movable panel adapted to effect packing and compression of the refuse, is characterised in that the panel is so connected with the bucket elevating means that it is forcibly moved to its open or closed position in accordance with the movement of said elevating means. In the embodiment shown, refuse is placed in a bucket 19 and is discharged into a container 13, pivotally mounted at 15 on a vehicle chassis 10, through an opening 27a normally closed by a panel 27 pivotally mounted on the container at 37. The bucket has a hinged cover 42 and is pivotally supported on arms 20 secured to a shaft 21. This shaft is rotated so as to move the bucket to its discharging position above the opening 27a by arms 22 rigidly secured to the shaft and connected to pistons operating in fluid-pressure cylinders 23 pivotally mounted at 24 on the container. When the arms are raised, the panel 27 is moved to the open position shown in broken lines by rods 26 and as the bucket approaches the top of the container, it is tilted to a discharge position by projections thereon engaging members 41 on the container. Side wings on the panel 27 register with the tilted bucket to prevent refuse falling outside the opening 27a. When the arms 20 are lowered and the rods 26 return the panel 27 to its closed position, ribs 271 on the panel compress the refuse in the container. Refuse is discharged from the container through a gate 28 when the container is tipped rearwardly about its pivot 15 by a piston-and-cylinder device 16. The gate 28 is pivotally suspended from hinges 29 and is provided with hooks 30 co-operating with lugs on the container, these hooks being automatically released from their locking position and the gate automatically raised by the movement of the arms 20. When the latter are raised, cables 42 connected by hooks 43 to the hooks 30 and to springs 44 secured in the arms 20, will first pivot the hooks 30 so as to unlock them and then pull the gate to its raised position. When the container is returned to its normal position and the bucket 19 lowered, the hooks 43 may be disengaged from the hooks 30 and then moved to their locking position, the springs 44 automatically retrieving the cables. The hooks 30 may be released manually from their locking position.
