Abstract

Polyvinyl acetal resins having 9-30 per cent residual polyvinyl alcohol are made by adding with vigorous agitation one or more aldehydes containing at least two carbon atoms to a preponderantly aqueous solution of a polyvinyl ester hydrolysed to at least 75 per cent, containing all of the hydrolysed ester to be reacted, in presence of an acid catalyst and absence of a dispersing agent, other than a colloid capable of being converted into the acetal being produced, at below 45 DEG C., continuing agitation while a partially acetalized resin is precipitated, and then maintaining or raising the temperature while continuing agitation until the desired composition of product is obtained. The hydrolysis of the polyvinyl ester may be carried out in presence of an acid catalyst, preferably the same as that used in the acetalization, and is preferably effected within the range 40 DEG to 70 DEG C. Acid corresponding to the polyvinyl ester used may be added to the dispersion before or with the acid catalyst. The hydrolysis of the polyvinyl ester may be carried out continuously by hydrolysing in presence of an acid catalyst to an intermediate stage, replacing part of the solution by further polyvinyl ester dispersion and acid catalyst, repeating the cycle of operations, diluting successive portions of solution removed with water and permitting hydrolysis to proceed to at least 75 per cent, using the same acid catalyst as used in the acetalization. The polyvinyl ester dispersion used may be in the form of beads, flakes or powder of polymer, dispersed in water or produced by polymerization of the monomer in aqueous emulsion. If desired, the acetalized product may be washed with water and then at elevated temperatures, e.g. 70-95 DEG C., with aqueous sodium or potassium hydroxide. Specified aldehydes are acetaldehyde, paraldehyde, butyraldehyde, propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde. Polyvinyl acetate is the preferred ester. Specification 577,861 is referred to.
