Abstract
621,549. Screwdrivers. ESLICK, A. U. Feb. 18, 1947, Nos. 4693 and 4694. Convention dates, Feb. 20, 1946, and Feb. 4, 1947. [Class 61(iii)] A screwdriver provided with means to engage the face of the screw head so as to steady it during driving, comprises a tubular stem 1 in which a block 8 is urged outwardly by a spring 10 to an extent limited by a pin and slot 9, 7. The block carries the bit 4, which normally projects beyond the stem and engages in a slot 3 in the stem. In use, the bit is engaged in the kerf of the screw and, when pressure is applied, withdraws into the stem until the end 1a of the latter engages the face of the screw head. The bit may consist of two resilient strips splayed apart to grip the kerf, as shown, or may be a single strip. In a modification, Fig. 11, the two strips 14, 15 of the bit are carried by a pin 17 in a tubular upper part of the block 8 and extend into a slot 24a in a member 24 which is urged outwardly of the block 8 by a spring 25. The strip 14 is longer than the strip 15 and engages the pin 17 by means of an elongated slot 13, so that normally the member 24 acts to push the strip 14 outwardly to facilitate entry of the blades into the kerf.
