629,042. Electrolytic production of pinacols and pinacolines. WARD, BLENKINSOP, & CO., Ltd., DICKENSON, H. G., and WEISS, J. Aug. 15, 1947, No. 22700. [Class 41] A process for the production of pinacols and pinacolines comprises electrolytically reducing a ketone present in an aqueous catholyte while superimposing an alternating current upon the direct electrolysing current. The ratio of alternating to direct current may be between 1.01 and 1.5. The anolyte and catholyte may be dilute solutions of sulphuric acid and the catholyte may also contain an organic solvent, for example, ethanol, for the ketone undergoing reduction. The electrodes may be of graphite, but are preferably of metal, such as lead, copper-lead and platinum.
