[Class 37] [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XXXIX] In an arrangement for displaying, for example the calling or wanted numbers in a telephone system, on the screen of a cathode-ray tube, the movement of the spot is controlled by varying character-reproducing potentials superimposed on steady character spacing or lay-out potentials. The varying potentials are generated with the aid of a set of continuously driven condensers C2X, C2Y, &c., Fig. 2,with specially shaped plates. These amplitude modulated currents from an oscillator OSC, Fig. 2, and the modulated currents are rectified and produce character forming voltages on the wires 2X, 2Y, &c. The character forming voltages are selected as shown by a number of uniselectors FS, Fig. 1, or by relay groups, the wipers of the respective switches (or the relay groups) being connected in turn by a constantly-running distributer LC which also connects up steady potentials for spacing the characters on the tube face. The Specification includes directions for shaping the condenser plates, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown). The CRO may have a long afterglow or the speed of the wipers of LC may be such that the figures are traced with the required rapidity to create the effect of simultaneous appearance. Equipment for photographing each display may be provided. The figure generator FG may feed a number of tubes. The vanes of FG may be appropriately shaped for systems in which characters, other than figures, are to be displayed.
