Abstract
Interpolymers suitable for making coatings and films are obtained by heating styrene with unsaturated drying oil fatty acids. A polymerisation catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, may be used. The reaction may be carried out in aqueous emulsion or in solution and in a modification an excess of styrene serves also as solvent. In another modification a drying oil fatty acid ester is used and the copolymer produced hydrolysed and the product acidified and extracted with a solvent. Fatty acids specified include the acids derived from wood, oiticica, linseed and dehydrated castor, elaeostearic oils and elaeostearic acid. Coating compositions are obtained by esterifying the interpolymers with polyhydric alcohols. Alkali metal and ammonium soaps of the interpolymers may be used as detergents, the cobalt, manganese and lead soaps as driers and the zinc, calcium and aluminium soaps as wetting and dispersing agents.
