618,754. Steering-gear for tractor-trailer combinations. LETOURNEAU, Inc., R. G. Dec. 2, 1946, No. 35679. Convention date, Jan. 15. [Class 79 (v)] A power steering mechanism for a tractortrailer combination comprises a reversible multiple speed prime mover, controllable by the driver to give different speeds in each direction. The prime mover is preferably an electric motor having a low-speed winding and a high-speed winding. In Fig. 1, the twowheeled tractor 1 having a rear platform 7 which carries the electric power steering mechanism 6 for applying relative steering movement between the tractor and draft arm 5 of the two-wheeled trailer 3. The electrical system, Fig. 2, comprises an engine-driven heavy duty generator 12 and a three-wire energizing circuit 13 supplying the high-speed winding 10 or low-speed winding 11 of the reversible motor 9 through reversing switches 16 and 17 respectively. The reversing switches are actuated by a battery 21 by means of the switches 22 which are controlled. by rocking levers 27 mounted in front of the driver and under grab handles 29 so that the driver can grip the handles and move the levers 27 by his fingers. Movement of one lever 27 gives a high geared steering for forward or reverse travelling and the other gives low gear steering when travelling in reverse.
