Abstract

618,193. Turbines. SMITH, D. M., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 31, 1946, No. 32382. [Class 110 (iii)] A reversible internal-combustion turbine comprises a stator provided with movable vanes to impart swirl in one direction or the other to the working medium and a rotor formed with fixed vanes which extend substantially in radial planes and define passages which increase in cross-section between the inlet which is at the periphery of the rotor and the outlet which is near the axis of the rotor. Working medium enters the turbine through a volute 2 and swirl is imparted to the flow by passages 3 between the adjustable stator vanes 4. To reverse the direction of rotation the vanes are swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The vanes 4 are pivotally mounted in bearings 6 and are simultaneously operated by means outside the casing. The rotor 7 is provided with vanes 8 which extend in radial planes in an axial direction. In a modification, the rotor 7 is made conical and the working medium flows from an annulus concentric to the shaft at the periphery of the rotor through the rotor to a similar annulus near the axis of the rotor. The flow through the stator vanes 4 is then axial. The movable vanes may also be used for braking the rotor, by moving them into the neutral or reverse position. The ends of the rotor vanes 8 may be bent in one direction or the other to improve the efficiency of the turbine when rotating in one particular direction.
