Abstract

Sulphur trioxide is obtained by passing a gaseous mixture containing sulphur dioxide and oxygen through a bed of suitable catalyst in particulate form and maintained as an expanded bed. The preferred catalyst is silica gel on which metallic platinum or vanadium pentoxide is supported. A suitable temperature is 380-460 DEG C. The sulphur dioxide may be converted to sulphuric acid or may be absorbed in sulphuric acid to produce acid of higher concentration. If a vanadium pentoxide catalyst is used, steam may be admixed with the initial sulphur dioxide and oxygen so as to produce sulphuric acid or fuming sulphuric acid. Specifications 568,913 and 569,691 (in the Provisional Specification) are referred to.
