Abstract
617,060. Eddy-current brakes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and AYRES, W. E. M. Nov. 28, 1944, No. 23741. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a slip coupling, eddy current brake or dynamometer, one member is a disc or drum arranged in an air gap in the second member in such manner that the flux passes transversely through the disc or drum from one to the other of a pair of unbroken (untoothed) faces on the other member. In the form shown, an engine shaft 3 carries wound field members 1, 2 having an intermediate magnetic ring 30 extending between the two non-magnetic discs 10, 31 constituting the driven member. These have magnetic inserts 32, 33 facing the polepieces 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b on parts 1, 2. Alternatively, a single disc may be employed and this may be magnetic with slots facing the said polepieces. In another form, the driving member has a single coil and the air gap is arranged so that teeth on the driven member project axially into it. The faces of the driving member may be coated with a good conductor or may carry a squirrel cage. One side of the air gap may be bounded by a stationary magnetic member which may carry the winding, and may be formed of coil strip. In the case of brakes or dynamometers, the stationary member may be cooled by fluid passed through ducts therein. According to the Provisional Specification the exciting winding may be omitted and permanent magnets used. Specification 617,059, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
