616,457. Spring mountings for the bogies of railway vehicles. METALASTIK, Ltd., HIRST, A. J., LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD, COLLINS, A. F., and DICKSON, F. Sept. 4, 1946, No. 26544. [Classes 103 (vi) and 108 (iii)] A suspension system for resiliently supporting the bolster 13 of a railway vehicle bogie comprises a pair of rubber panel or sandwich mountings D, D arranged at an inclination to each other between oppositely inclined faces 15 on the bolster and opposed inclined surfaces 16 on the bogie frame 11, so that the mountings operate in shear and compression under vertical loading, mainly in compression under longitudinal loading and mainly in shear under lateral loading. The mountings D may also be inclined upwardly and inwardly, the planes containing the axes of the mountings on opposite sides of the bogie meeting on a longitudinal axis above the centre of gravity of the suspended mass. Each mounting comprises a plurality of rubber pads 2 of circular or otherwise sectioned prismatic form, which are rectangular or circular in plan, of rhomboidal cross section in one plane as indicated, and of rectangular section in a plane at right-angles to that plane. The pads are surface bonded to metal plates 1 connected by bolts 3, 4. The unstrained axis A-A of the pads 1 is inclined to the plates 1 at such an angle that it becomes perpendicular to the plates when the tare load is applied. The end plates 1 fit into arcuate flanges 6 on attachment plates 5 and are held in position by clamps 8, 9.
