Abstract
Hydrocarbon non-siccative oils or crystallized hydrocarbons are produced from wood rosin (colophony) or from oils obtained by the dry distillation of colophony, by heating with an amount of sulphur of the order of 1 per cent of the weight of the rosin or rosin oil, in the presence of ferric oxide and air or oxygen. The sulphur is regenerated in situ by the simultaneous action of the oxygen and of the ferric oxide, which permits the reduction of the proportion of sulphur used from the 50 per cent or so formerly used. No substantial evolution of sulphuretted hydrogen should occur. The reaction may be carried out at approximately 250 DEG C., the volume of air introduced into the mixture being controlled to obtain more or less complete regeneration of the sulphur. In an example, 100 kg. of colophony, 1 kg. of sulphur and 3 to 5 kg. of ferric oxide are mixed and heated to 250 DEG C., while air is injected into the mass for 6 hours at the rate of 8 cubic meters per hour. The resultant oil is distilled and then does not dry when heated in an oven at 100 DEG C. for 15 hours. The oils produced in this manner are said to be suitable for use as lubricants, while the crystallized masses obtained by the treatment of rosin oil in a similar manner are said to contain high proportions of retene.ALSO:Hydrocarbon non-siccative oils or mixtures of crystallized hydrocarbons rich in retene are produced from colophony or from rosin oil by heating with an amount of sulphur of the order of one per cent of the weight of the rosin or rosin oil in the presence of ferric oxide and air or oxygen. The reaction may be carried out at about 250 DEG C., the volume of air introduced into the mixture being controlled to obtain more or less complete regeneration of the sulphur. In an example, 100 kg. of colophony, 1 kg. of sulphur and 3 to 5 kg. of ferric oxide are mixed and heated to 250 DEG C. while air is injected into the mass for 6 hours at the rate of 8 cu. metres per hour. The resultant oil is distilled. When rosin oil is similarly treated, crystallized masses such as retene are obtained. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the production of liquid hydrocarbons of the octohydroretene type. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
