Abstract

615,769. Measuring How of granular materials. MORLEY, R. J., WESTON, S. F., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 14, 1946, No. 24129. [Class 69 (i)] An apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of a particulate solid through a vessel comprises means for varying the temperature of a portion of the solid and at a known distance or distances below this temperature-varying means, a temperature - sensitive device or devices which will give an indication when the treated portion of the solid has reached that point. The particulate solid may be heated by electrical resistance coils, steam coils, eddy current induction heating or by currents passing between electrodes which protrude into the vessel. The electrodes may be distributed uniformly around a cross-section of the vessel so as to uniformly heat that portion of the solid in the vicinity of the electrodes or they may be disposed only over a limited portion of the crosssection so that the solid is not heated uniformly. The temperature-sensitive devices may actuate a remote recording means upon any temperature change. In one form, the particulate solid is heated asymmetrically by electrodes 2, 3 and a thermocouple is formed by the heated particulate solid and electrodes 4, 5.
