Abstract
602,711. Variable-speed gearing. CAMILLIS, L. Nov. 10. 1945, No. 30085. [Class 80 (ii)] In a multiple sprocket gear-changing mechanism for cycles of the type known as " Derailleur," such as described in Specification 509,793, in which the shifting of the gearchanging jockey sprocket is effected by a looped Bowden cable 4, 4, the ends of the cable pass around an eccentric groove 2a on a drum 2 secured to the hand-operating lever 6 and are anchored to a peg 4d. The arrangement is such that on changing from a higher to a lower speed ratio with a consequent increase in the spring tension on the chain, the initial tension on the cable is released. Alternatively, the groove 2a is concentric with the drum 2, but the latter is eccentrically mounted, or a concentric drum with a suitable cam formation may be used.
