Abstract

602,411. Variable-speed gears. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1945, No. 26941. Convention date, July 18, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] The speed of a blower 11 suitable for supercharging an aircraft cabin is controlled by the air flow which causes a variable pressure to act on the pilot valve 21 of a servomotor 29, the liquid pressure acting on the latter also acting on a diaphragm 34 to re-centre the pilot valve, and the piston 29 is connected to the control valve 47 of a further liquid pressure servomotor 8 whose movement throttles the flow of liquid from the outlet of a pump 7 driven from gearing 2 from which the blower is also driven, the arrangement being such that the variable load imposed on the pump by the action of the throttle 8 acts through the gearing to vary the speed imparted to the blower from the engine shaft 1 ; and, also, the outlet pressure of the pump is applied through a conduit 40 to a piston 44 which varies the position of a sleeve valve 44a constituting a seat for control valve 47, whereby the latter is restored to neutral by the consequential variation in the output pressure of the pump. Restrictions 27 and 36 situated, respectively, in the control conduit leading to servomotor 29 and in the conduit leading this control pressure to followup diaphragm 34, stabilize these two controls. The air flow from the supercharger is led through a venturi 13 and the ensuing differential pressures act on a diaphragm 17 which has a variable spring loading 18 and is in contact with the spindle of pilot valve 21. Eccentric studs 53, 54 limit the movement of servomotor 29, and the spindle of the latter has a pin-andslot connection with sleeve valve 44a. The gearing interposed in the drive between the engine shaft and the blower and pump comprises a ring gear driven by shaft 1 and driving planet gear 4 carried by a spider which drives the pump. The planet gears also engage with a sun gear 3 which drives the blower.
