Abstract
600,790. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. SOC. D'APPLICATION DES BREVETS COTAL. July 23, 1945, No. 18836. Convention date, March 26, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] An electromagnetically operated variablespeed gear for marine and other use comprises an epicyclic reversing-gear 8 connected to the prime mover by an elastic coupling 1 and driving through a two-speed gear 11 and a fixed reduction gear 19 a propeller-shaft 16 mounted in a thrust-bearing 25 and provided with a shaft-brake 24. As shown, epicyclic two-speed and fixed reduction gears are provided and the brake 24 is electromagnetically operated. The reversing-gear comprises planets 8, meshing with a driving sun 4 and a driven annulus 10, the freely-journalled carrier 7 of which coacts with a clutch 3 on the driving shaft 2 and with a fixed brake 9 for direct and reverse drive respectively. The two-speed gear comprises a similar unit, the driving annulus 10<1> and driven planet-carrier 11 of which are solid with the annulus 10 and the driving sun 17 of the fixed reduction gear respectively, and the freelyjournalled reaction sun 14 of which gives solid or reduced drive according as its carrier 13 coacts with a clutch 12 on the planet carrier 11 or a fixed brake 15. The epicyclic fixed reduction gear may be replaced by a simple spur gear reduction drive to an offset propellershaft. The shaft-brake 24 is normally energized when the supply to the other electromagnets is cut off. Lubrication is provided by a pump 6 driven from a gear 5 on the driving shaft 2.
