Abstract
593,583. Microscopes. FASSEL, E. G. Feb. 2, 1945, No. 2714. [Class 97 (i)] Apparatus for examining miniature photographs on a strip, such as a film, comprises a microscope adjustably mounted over a feedway to be focused on the strip, and a housing apertured at the top and at the bottom and disposed above the feedway and rotatable about an axis, which is perpendicular to the path of the strip and passes through the object glass or centrally between the object glasses of the microscope, the housing having mounted therein and rotatable therewith a pair of reflecting surfaces disposed one above the other, which are equally and oppositely inclined to the axis of rotation and a reflecting surface parallel to the axis, which mirrors effect lateral inversion of the rays of light from the strip, the rotation of the housing effecting an angular adjustment of the image of matter carried by the strip. As shown in Fig. 4, a binocular microscope 10 is adjustable, parallel to a pillar 13, on a member 12 slidable on the pillar which is secured to a member 14 mounted over an apertured plate 30 on a centring slide 22, which is supported on a frame 21 upstanding from a base 20, the slide being apertured at 23 and movable by a screw 25. Fixed to the slide 22 is a housing 28 containing a lamp 29 to illuminate the film A which is movable in a feedway formed between a glass plate 31 clipped to the plate 30 and a glass plate 33 clipped to the member 14, which is apertured above the feedway. The margin of this aperture is undercut to form a bearing for an annular plate 37 screwed to a housing 39, which is thus rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the film A and passing centrally between the two object glasses 45 of the microscope. Mounted in the housing 39 and rotatable therewith are mirrors 40-42, the mirrors 40, 42 being equally and oppositely inclined to the axis of rotation and the mirror 41 being parallel to it. Lateral inversion of the rays from the film is effected bv the mirror combination, and rotation of the housing effects an angular adjustment of the image of matter carried by film A as viewed through the microscope. The film A is supported on the opposite sides of the feedway by cup-shaped holders, each mounted, as shown in Fig. 2 for the supply holder 50, on an arm 51 turning on a spring-biassed hinge 53, which urges the holder to the upright position and is carried by a slide 54 adjustable on the base 20, transversely to the path of the film, so as to cause the face of the film reel, which protrudes from the cup, to bear against a friction driving disc 61, rotatable by a handle 65 through gearing in a box 63 supported on the base 20. For loading the film, the holders are swung down about their hinges. Modifications are described for a binocular mon-objective microscope and a monocular microscope, which is constructed with the housing 39 between the object glass and the eyepiece of the microscope.
