Abstract
592,141. Variable-speed gearing. PRESTWICH, J. A. May 22, 1945, No. 12743. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A variable - speed countershaft gear suitable for a motorcycle, consists of an intermediate double V-pulley C carried in a frame F pivoted at G, and connected by endless belts D, E to driving and driven pulleys A, B. Pulley C consists of two fixed conical flanges 12, 13 and two flanges 16 bolted together and slidable on the sleeve 11 surrounding the countershaft 6. Movement of the sliding flange 16 towards or away from either of the flanges 12 or 13 will increase the pitch diameter of the V-pulley at one end of the sleeve and decrease the other. Such movement is obtained by rocking the frame F about its pivot G. The movement is assisted by balls 33 guided in inclined radial grooves 32 in a flange 31, and bearing on the slidable flange 16. A spring which may be accommodated inside the pulley may also assist the change of gear ratio. The pulley may be rotated to start up the engine by connecting the countershaft 6 to a spring-loaded pedal or handle 22 by a toothed pinion and quadrant gear 19, 20, the pinion having a ratchet connection with the shaft 6. An annular lubricating felt pad 23 is disposed round the inside of the case 16 for lubricating the parts when the machine is idle. Ventilation holes may be provided in the pulley flanges.
