Abstract

Cellular materials are produced by incorporating a substance which liberates gas at elevated temperature in a composition comprising a copolymer of vinyl chloride with up to 100 per cent of its weight of a dialkyl fumarate and a plasticiser for the copolymer, and then heating to liberate the gas. Listed fumarates are the dimethyl, diethyl, di-n-butyl, diisobutyl, dicyclohexyl, dibenzyl and di-(chloroethyl) esters. Suitable plasticisers include dimethyl, diethyl, dibutyl and dioctyl phthalates, tricresyl and tricetyl phosphates, methoxyethyl acetyl ricinoleate, di-(butoxyethyl) sebacate, triethylene glycol di-(2-ethyl hexanoate) and linear polyesters, e.g. 1.2-propylene sebacate. Specified blowing agents include carbonates, bicarbonates, sulphites, bisulphites, metabisulphites, nitrites and stabilized diazo compounds, e.g. diazoaminobenzene. Where an inorganic blowing agent is used, preferably a small amount of an acid such as stearic acid is incorporated in the composition. Cured cellular materials may be obtained by addition of curing agents, e.g. magnesium or zinc oxide or a butyraldehyde-aniline condensation product or sulphur and a rubber accelerator and a Group II metal oxide. Other ingredients, e.g. pigments and stabilizers, may also be added. Specified uses for the cellular products include mats, arm rests, cushions, toys, insulating materials and sponges. In the examples, the preparation of the copolymer in aqueous emulsion is described, using an aqueous medium containing ammonium persulphate and the sodium salt of a sulphonated paraffin oil and the pH adjusted to 3 by addition of formic acid. The sodium salt of sulphonated paraffin oil is obtained by passing a mixture of sulphur dioxide and chlorine into a refined petroleum oil of initial b.p. 266 DEG C., heated to 90-102 DEG C. The reaction was catalysed by light. The product was hydrolysed by pouring into sodium hydroxide solution and unreacted oil removed by separation and ether extraction of the aqueous solution. Specifications 570,331 and 586,796 are referred to.
