Abstract

A fuel especially suitable for starting and running Diesel engines in cold weather comprises a hydrocarbon Diesel type fuel oil blended with sufficient of a dialkyl ether solution of an ignition promoter, containing 1-50 per cent. by weight of the promoter, to give a concentration of 0.1 to 5 per cent. of the promoter in the final product. Ethers which may be employed include one or more of diethyl ether, di-n-propyl ether, ethyl n-octyl ether, di-n-butyl ether, and mixtures of isomeric amyl or hexyl ethers. Ignition promoters mentioned are tri-acetone peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, polynitro-aromatics, aryl picrates, sulphur, nitrogen tetrasulphide, mercapto-benzothiazole, nitro-urea, acyl amines, acyl oximes, sulphurised aliphatic amines, alkyl hydrazones or corresponding aralkyl derivatives thiocarbazones, thiocarbamates and sulphurised derivatives thereof, benziminazole, p-tolyl hydrazine quinolyl hydrazine, carbazole, p-nitroso dimethyl aniline piperine, 5-amino uracil, 5-diazo uracil, isatin, TNT, 2, 4, 6 trinitrophenyl hydrazine, o-nitroso nitrobenzene, symdiphenyl carbazide, amidoxyl benzoate, diacetyl monoxime, furyl acrolein oxime, furildioxime, parabanic acid, acetyl phenyl hydrazine, diphenyl nitrosoamine, 1-phenyl 3-methyl 5-pyrazolone, 4, 41-dinitro-diazoaminobenzene, p-nitrobenzamide, 6-nitroquinaldine, 6-nitrobenzimidazole, 5-di-p-nitrophenyl carbazide, cuprous chloride, butyl mercuric nitrate, calcium nitrate, calcium bromide, zirconium oxychloride, triphenyl tin chloride, triphenyl tin bromide, yellow phosphorus, pyrophosphoric acid, cobaltous chloride, sodium cobaltinitrite and nickel ethylacetoace tate. The fuel composition may also contain other known additives such as stabilizers, corrosion inhibitors, pour point depressors, viscosity improvers and anti-oxidants. Specific anti-oxidants mentioned are phenols, naphthols, hydroquinone, aminophenols and their homologues. The ignition of the fuel compositions may be further promoted by adding small amounts of a halogen such as chlorine or a volatile halogen-containing compound such as ethyl chloride to the intake air. In an example, a fuel composition comprises petroleum hydrocarbon oil, di-n-butyl ether and benzoyl peroxide.
